Yasuke is said to be an individual of African origin who served under the Oda clan in Sengoku period Japan. He was said to be one of many Africans who came along with the Portuguese to Japan during the Nanban trade. It is said that his name “Yasuke” may have been derived from the Portuguese “Isaque” or Ethiopian “Yisake”, both forms of the modern “Isaac” we know today.
