千葉市美術館「生誕100年 清水九兵衞／六兵衞」展さや堂ホール関連展示｜後期

彫刻と空間の関係を重視した清水九兵衞（1922−2006）が、作品のタイトルに繰り返し使用した「アフィニティ」。「親和」を意味するこの言葉は、現代においてどのような意義を持ちうるのでしょうか。陶を主な表現手段とし、千葉県をはじめ関東圏で活躍する現代アーティスト4名による「インクルーシブ・サイト―陶表現の現在」展は、清水が彫刻家として問い続けた問題を引き継ぎ、その可能性を検証することを目的に企画されました。
千葉市美術館の1階に位置するさや堂ホールは、1927（昭和2）年に川崎銀行千葉支店として建てられ、現在は市の有形文化財に指定されています。建築家の大谷幸夫（1924−2013）は、美術館の建設にあたり、この歴史的建造物を美術館の中核に内蔵する「鞘堂方式」を採用しました。このことから美術館の歩みだけでなく、さや堂ホールは千葉市という都市が重ねた歴史を建物の内部に留めています。
本展では、そのような入れ子状の場であるさや堂ホールを会場に、彫刻家の藤原彩人を企画協力者に迎え、清水の造形思考と空間への新たな解釈を試みます。彫刻と陶芸の境界領域で、比類のない造形を生み出す藤原、陶の素材と技法を通じ、記憶上の場所や記憶の在り方を具象化する桑名紗衣子、断片としての人物像を配置し、空間をつなぎ合わせる土屋裕介、陶に糸や木といった異素材を組み合わせ、かたちの普遍性を探る北林加奈子。4名のアーティストによる作品は、土から造形される彫刻が、外部の環境と決して切り離すことができない事実を私たちに気づかせ、多様な陶表現の現在のありようを指し示すことでしょう。

Kiyomizu Kyubey (1922-2006) revered the connection between sculpture and space, using “Affinity” repeatedly in the title of his artworks. What significance can the word “affinity” hold in contemporary times? The exhibition, “Inclusive Site: Expression in Ceramics Today” by four contemporary artists active in Chiba Prefecture and the Kanto area using ceramic as main method of expression, was planned with the aim of inheriting the issues that Kiyomizu, as sculptor, continuedly asked, and of investigating their possibilities.
Saya-do Hall, located on the first floor of Chiba City Museum of Art, was erected in 1927 as the Chiba branch of Kawasaki Bank, and is now designated a tangible cultural property of the city. The architect Otani Sachio (1924-2013), when constructing the museum, adopted a “sheath structure” method to incorporate this historical building at the core of the museum. As such, not only part of the history of the museum, Saya-do Hall brings into the building its long history within the city of Chiba.
This exhibition, with Saya-do Hall with its nested state as venue, welcomes sculptor, Fujiwara Ayato as project supporter, and attempts a new interpretation of Kiyomizu’s ideas of form and space. Fujiwara, creating forms otherwise unknown in a realm bordering sculpture and ceramic; Kuwana Saeko, embodying places of memories and the presence of memories using ceramic materials and techniques; Tsuchiya Yusuke, positioning fragments of statues and linking together spaces; and Kitabayashi Kanako, combining the unusual materials of yarn and wood with ceramic and seeking universality of form. The artwork by the four artists brings to our attention the fact that sculpture shaped from earth can never be separated from its external environment, and points to how diverse ceramic expression is today.
