聞き手として対談に参加するのは、最新刊『本心』が話題の小説家・平野啓一郎さんです。 社会にはびこる自己責任論、格差や労働問題など、現代社会の空気がにじむような数々の作品で知られています。
■サンデル教授が指摘する「能力主義」のダークサイドとは？
私たちはこれまでの人生で、「継続は力なり」「努力はきっと報われる」……などといった、一生懸命がんばる人を鼓舞する慣用表現を、何度も当たり前のように耳にし、口にしてきました。
しかし、これらは時に誰かをひどく傷つけ、社会の分断を加速させる危うい側面がある。それがサンデル教授が著書で指摘しているポイントの一つです。
「がんばれば報われるんだ」と信じて努力した結果、成功を勝ち取った人々が「私が成功できたのは、私が努力したからだ」と感じるようになる。
これは反転させると、困難を抱える人たちへの「あなたが辛い状況にいるのは、努力が足りないからだ」という眼差しになりえるからです。
学歴があまりにも重視され、その人がどんな職業についているかが「社会から認められる価値」と結びつき過ぎている世の中は、自己責任論を強め、分断を深刻にします。
番組では「どうしていくべきなのか」を2人がそれぞれの視点で語ります。

■マイケル・サンデル教授 プロフィール
1953年生まれ。ハーバード大学教授。専門は政治哲学。コミュニタリアニズム（共同体主義）の代表的論者として知られる。ハーバード大学の学部科目“Justice(正義)”は延べ14,000人を超す履修者数を記録。あまりの人気ぶりに、同大は建学以来初めて講義を一般公開することを決定。日本ではNHK教育テレビ（現Eテレ）で『ハーバード白熱教室』（全12回）として放送されている。著書『これからの「正義」の話をしよう』は世界各国で大ベストセラーとなり、日本でも累計100万部を突破した。
■平野啓一郎さん プロフィール
小説家。1975年愛知県蒲郡市生まれ。北九州市出身。京都大学法学部卒。1999年在学中に文芸誌「新潮」に投稿した『日蝕』により第120回芥川賞を受賞。40万部のベストセラーとなる。以後、一作毎に変化する多彩なスタイルで、数々の作品を発表し、各国で翻訳紹介されている。2004年には、文化庁の「文化交流使」として一年間、パリに滞在した。
著書に、小説『葬送』、『決壊』、『ドーン』、『空白を満たしなさい』、『マチネの終わりに』、『ある男』、『本心』等、エッセイ・対談集に『私とは何か 「個人」から「分人」へ』、『「カッコいい」とは何か』等がある。

What can be the “cure” for a meritocratic society?
The overemphasis on academic credentials in society which Professor Sandel pointed out in his latest book, is also endemic in Japan. The concept of “self-responsibility” is particularly deep-rooted and violently marginalizes the underprivileged and those perceived as society’s failures.
While Professor Sandel and Mr. Keiichiro Hirano, the interview partner, have very different backgrounds, both have shared concerns over the rising inequality. The two speakers will talk about the challenges in modern society and the key to a better future in a post-pandemic world and cover the following viewpoints: what modesty should the elite have, restoring the dignity of work, and how to integrate “lucks and coincidences” into systems and policies.
■About Keiichiro Hirano
Keiichiro Hirano wrote has written more than 15 novels since his debut work “The Eclipse” for which he won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize at the record age of 23. Keiichiro Hirano is not only an author but in Japan, he is also known as an opinion leader with a background in philosophy.
He is a proponent of Dividualism, the idea that there are multiple sides to a single personality and that by accepting diversity within oneself, one can cope with various events and accept the diversity of society. He wrote his works based on this idea. His deeply psychological fiction deals with profound and universal themes like self-love, relationships and acceptance, and spans from short stories and historical novels to essays, love stories and literary sci-fi. Many of his books have been translated and are widely read in France, China, Korea, Taiwan, Italy, and Egypt.
