三木稔は我が国を代表する民族主義的作曲家である。
1930年に徳島県に生まれ、東京藝術大学で池内友次郎、伊福部昭に師事、このことが彼の作風確定の決定的な出会いとなった。
作曲家キャリアの滑り出しも好調であったが、家庭の事情から商業的な仕事を優先せざるを得なくなり、芸術作家としてのデビューはやや遅くなったという。。
合唱作品や純粋邦楽の新曲などに尽力する一方、オーケストラ曲も盛んに作曲し、難曲と呼ばれながらも非常に高評価を得てゆくことになる。
三木のこうした姿勢は日本国内の作曲家だけではなく、アジアの民族主義作家たちを刺激することになり、大アジア的な活動につながっていったとも言われる。
またマリンバ奏者の草分けである、安倍圭子との出会いはその後マリンバの主要レパートリーとなる名曲を生み出し、現在もマリンバ奏者に好んで取り上げられている。
晩年になると創作姿勢はオペラに大きく傾斜して行き、またその作品が次々と国際的に成功、日本民族主義作家の第一人者として欠かすことの出来ない存在となった。
ピアノ曲に関してはあまりその作品は多くないが、様々な編成にアレンジされ愛されるようになった曲も多い。
この夏の叙事詩は4曲からなる組曲であり、日本的な行事を題材とした素朴で力強い音楽である。
師の影響はもちろんではあるが、それをさらに素朴にし、土俗的な中に郷愁すら感じさせる、原始の響き漂わせながら、一方でそれだけでないモダニズムも内包させるという一種職人芸的な作曲姿勢はこの小さなピアノ曲集でも堪能することが出来る。
若い演奏家にはあまり取り上げられていないようにも思われる三木稔作品、今後も多くの人に取り上げられ、その中で若者なりの言葉として醸成されることを願ってやまない。
三木稔は2011年敗血症により惜しまれながら亡くなった。

Minoru Miki is one of Japan’s leading nationalistic composers.
He was born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1930, and studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi and Akira Ifukube at the Tokyo University of the Arts, which was a decisive encounter in establishing his style.
His career as a composer got off to a good start, but his family circumstances forced him to prioritize commercial work, and his debut as an artist was somewhat delayed.
While devoting himself to choral works and new compositions of purely Japanese music, he also composed orchestral works, which were called difficult to write, but received very high acclaim.
It is said that Miki’s attitude stimulated not only composers in Japan but also nationalist writers in Asia, leading to his activities in the greater Asian region.
In addition, his encounter with Keiko Abe, a pioneer marimba player, produced a masterpiece that has since become a major part of the marimba repertoire, and is still favored by marimba players today.
In his later years, his creative stance shifted more toward opera, and his works became internationally successful, and he became an indispensable figure as a leading Japanese nationalist writer.
As for his piano works, there are not many, but many of them have been arranged for various orchestras and have become popular.
This summer epic, a suite of four pieces, is a simple yet powerful music based on Japanese events.
In this small collection of piano pieces, we can enjoy a kind of artisanal approach to composition, in which the influences of the master are, of course, made even more simple, and even nostalgic in their earthiness, with a hint of primitiveness, while at the same time embracing modernism.
It is my hope that the works of Minoru Miki, which do not seem to be taken up by many young performers, will be taken up by many more people in the future, and that they will be fostered into a language of their own.
Minoru Miki sadly passed away from sepsis in 2011.
