Headline: CDC To States: Stay Vigilant as Coronavirus Case Decline Stalls
THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE Control and Prevention is deeply concerned about a potential shift in the downward trajectory of coronavirus cases and is warning states not to relax their restrictions, particularly as new virus variants spread.
Please hear me clearly: At this level of cases with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard earned ground we have gained,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said during a White House coronavirus briefing Monday.
“Now is not the time to relax critical safeguards,” she urged states.
While the U.S. has seen a six-week downward trend in cases, Walensky said Monday that the most recent seven-day average of new cases and deaths showed a roughly 2% increase compared to the prior seven days. The U.S. is currently averaging approximately 70,000 cases a day.
According to the CDC, the highest seven-day average in daily cases occurred on Jan. 11 but has since declined. However, even with the declines, the CDC has said the cases remain well above the case count during the U.S.’s first peak last year
