Sheena Ringo is one of my favourite – if not my absolute favourite – Japanese artists. Her range is incredible (more than 3 octaves. Three!) and her voice is full of all sorts of passion, anger, and sensuality, while still being playful and clean in tone. So obviously I thought I needed to cover one of her songs, wrecking all the vocal nuances in the process!
This song is the climax of Heisei Fūzoku, an album made in collaboration with violinist and composer Neko Saitō, which was written as the soundtrack to the film Sakuran (which I haven’t seen, but must get around to). This track – the album’s denouement and the film’s ending theme – is a duet with her brother, hip-hop artist Shiina Junpei. I think it’s as close to perfect as a finale can be, with its wild, joyous instrumentation and ever-building tension and final climactic release.
It’s not a wildly popular or successful song, but if you do enjoy it, go and take a deeper dive into Sheena Ringo’s material. There’s a hell of a lot of good stuff in there.
Like and subscribe for more climactic content.
