[ワシントン １６日 ロイター] – トランプ米大統領は、イランを攻撃すれば米国の湾岸同盟国に対する報復を招きかねないとの警告を受けていたと、米政府当局者と米情報機関の報告書に詳しい２人の関係者が明らかにした。
トランプ氏は１６日、イランの反応は予想外だったと述べた。
関係者の１人は、作戦開始前の情報分析ではイランの反応について、「確実に起こるとはされていなかったが、起こり得る結果の一つとして確かに挙げられていた」と述べた。
トランプ氏は１６日、２度にわたり、カタール、サウジアラビア、アラブ首長国連邦（ＵＡＥ）、バーレーン、クウェートに対するイランの報復攻撃は予想外だったと主張した。
「（イランは）中東のこれらの国々を攻撃するはずではなかった。誰も予想していなかった。われわれは衝撃を受けた」と語った。
トランプ政権はイランが近く米国本土を攻撃できるミサイルを保有するようになるなど、米情報機関の報告によって裏付けられていない主張を繰り返している。
こうした主張や、米国および中東地域に展開する米軍に対するイランの差し迫った脅威は、２月２８日にイスラエルと共同でイランに対する空爆を開始するというトランプ氏の決定を正当化するために、同氏や一部の側近が挙げたさまざまな理由に含まれている。
関係者によると、トランプ氏は作戦に先立ち、イランが経済的に極めて重要なホルムズ海峡の封鎖を図る可能性が高いとの説明も受けていた。
先週、戦争に関する政府のブリーフィングに出席した民主党議員らは、米国とイスラエルが戦争を開始する必要性を生じさせる差し迫った脅威について聞いていないと述べた。
ホワイトハウスはコメント要請にすぐに応じなかった。国家情報長官室はコメントを控えた。
