[ワシントン ２日 ロイター] – イランの最高指導者ハメネイ師が米国とイスラエルによる攻撃で死亡したことに抗議するデモ隊が週末、パキスタン南部カラチの米国領事館に押し入った際、米海兵隊がデモ隊に発砲したと、米当局者２人が２日明らかにした。外交施設での武力行使は異例であり、抗議活動が激化する中、パキスタン国内の緊張がさらに高まる可能性がある。
１日に起きた米領事館襲撃では１０人が死亡した。
米当局者らによると、海兵隊が発砲した弾丸が誰かに命中したか、あるいは死亡させたかは不明だという。米当局者が、海兵隊が抗議者への発砲に関与したことを認めたのはこれが初めて。
パキスタンの地元政府報道官は、「警備」要員が発砲したと述べたが、所属機関については明言しなかった。
米国の外交施設の日常的な警備業務は民間請負業者や現地部隊が担当することが多く、海兵隊が今回、事件に関与したという事実は、領事館が脅威をいかに深刻に受け止めていたかを浮き彫りにしている。
パキスタンはイランに次ぐ世界第２位のシーア派コミュニティーを抱える。抗議行動拡大を受けて、パキスタン政府は２日、全域で大規模集会を禁止した。
