[ワシントン ２５日 ロイター] – 米ホワイトハウスは２４日、連邦政府機関に対し、政府機関が来週閉鎖されるリスクに備え、大量解雇の計画をまとめるよう指示した。過去の閉鎖時には通常、職員の一時帰休が行われており、異例の対応となる。政府閉鎖を巡る上院民主党との対決を激化させた形だ。
ホワイトハウスの行政管理予算局（ＯＭＢ）は同日、議会がつなぎ予算案を可決しない場合、１０月１日に裁量的予算が失効するプログラム、プロジェクト、活動を特定するよう求める文書を各政府機関に送付した。
ＯＭＢは文書で「義務的支出で賄われないプログラムが、閉鎖の矢面に立つことになる」と述べた。
今回のホワイトハウスの動きに、政府機関閉鎖を利用してトランプ大統領の進める連邦政府職員の削減を進める狙いがあるのか、瀬戸際戦略としてつなぎ予算案の可決を民主党に迫る狙いがあるのかは不明。
上院民主党トップのシューマー院内総務はＯＭＢの声明に対し「脅迫の試みだ」と反発。「（トランプ氏は）就任初日から連邦政府職員を解雇してきた。統治のためではなく、脅迫のためだ」と述べた。
