Something BIG is on the Horizon for Guilty Gear… – Developer Interview
Hello and welcome. This is Rofulmonger, my friends. Today we’re going to talk about some news on the Ark System Works front. Uh, a lot of this comes from a very interesting interview that just happened with one of the head honchos over on the Guilty Gear team, Ken Muchi. And if you want to check out the full interview, I will have that linked for you in the video description. But, you know, a long story short, there’s a lot of things going on at Arc System Works. Obviously, hey, Marvel Toecon, kind of a big deal. So, that was a big get for sure. And unfortunately for Marvel Tokon, I don’t got more news for you directly. Uh, I’m expecting at EVO. That seems to make sense, especially cuz EVO is owned by Sony and Sony is funding this game. But a lot of the interview had to do about Marvel Toon in a way cuz a lot of people are assuming that, well, Marvel’s a thing, so therefore come Lucy, the cyberpunk collaboration for Guilty Gear, and that might be it for Guilty Gear Strive. And uh for Ken Mayuchi uh specifically stating hey maybe not so much specifically a quote here because we’ve recently announced a fighting game with a different IP Marvel Tokon and a lot of Guilty Gear Stri players might be worried that the game is going to end but that’s actually not true. Adding on to say I can’t talk much about it but we do have a plan. And some people might be thinking, well, Guilty Gear might have no more updates after the end of season 4 because we still haven’t announced anything yet. But that’s actually not true. I can’t say what our plans are right now, but I’m preparing something big and exciting. People probably won’t expect. They won’t know what we have in mind or what we’re preparing. That almost sounds like a threat to be honest with you. And hey, that’s tentalizing stuff. That’s uh I think a good way to say season 5 is effectively confirmed. You know, a lot of people maybe suspected as much, but it’s true. With Marvel Tokon definitely being the next big thing, a lot of people might be thinking, okay, maybe we’re suns setting Guilty Gear Strive. And maybe that’s not even necessarily a wrong thought to have. You know, Guilty Gear Strive’s been going strong for uh many years now, and it gets more support than like basically anything other than a Street Fighter title would normally get. Uh, but you know, going by the wording here, there’s going to be plenty of gas left in the tank. Obviously, they’re not announcing anything directly yet. EVO is like, oh my god, it’s like two weeks away now at this point roughly. Uh, so expect a lot of news there on the Arc System Works front along with other games. I’m very sure. At bare minimum, I know it’s not a lot and it’s expected, but at bare minimum, they did already confirmed that the Lucy trailer will run at EVO. Lucy, you know, long was announced last year as evil. So, it’s been a year now, right? So, it’s been some time and there has been some delays, but they confirmed it at the panel they had over at Anime Expo that we are getting the Lucy trailer at this year’s EVO and one would assume will release shortly thereafter, although hopefully not on the same day as Sagot and Street Fighter 6. So, hey, more Guilty Gear Strive to come. season 5. Uh, very likely to say the least, but there’s some other interesting Guilty Gear related stuff mentioned in this interview. So, you may be aware that Arc System Works is branching out in some pretty different ways. They did have that big uh showcase, you know, a direct if you will, which was um maybe poorly received cuz they definitely marketed towards, you know, the FGC like TuneIn, you know, where people make fighting games and it was a lot of not fighting games. And to be fair, if you’re unaware, Arc System Works is bigger than you think it is. They do a lot of publishing for a lot of like not fighting game stuff and they own several IPs that are not fighting game related and part of this uh direct if you will is to say hey we’re making more not fighting game things and we’re working specifically on like AA titles so somewhere between indie and you know AAA stuff and that’s great that’s fine just um they marketed it kind of poorly to tune in let’s put it that way cuz people were expecting like Marvel TCON news or Guilty Gear news and we didn’t getting none of that. That’s why I never made a video about it cuz there’s nothing for the fighting game audience there. But anyways, they’re working on not specific fighting game projects. That’s perfectly fine. I’m always probubble bobble myself. So, I’m not going to hold that against him even though it was a little bit disappointing. But as far as this interview goes, they did give some well fighting game related, not fighting game hints. So Ken Mayuchi in the interview uh just talking about like doing a bunch of different projects, juggling a lot of things at Arcus, right? I was talking about it’s unpredictable. I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but one good thing is I’m possibly thinking since we’re experts on making fighting games, but not particularly in other genres like action games or RPGs. A year ago, we bought a company called Acria, a studio that makes RPG games. And uh just to note, this is the company that makes stuff like Caligula Effect and the Sword Art Online games. So they are now tied with Arc System Works directly. So continuing on the interview they say because of that purchasing Acura that we are able to expand our development environment and now we are getting more people who have expertise in different fields and different genres. I think once we’re more confident then we may be able to work on bigger projects and that is something I’m looking forward to as a Guilty Gear producer. I’m always looking forward to make Guilty Gear games in different genres. Quite a statement to make. Guilty Gear has been in other genres before. No, not it’s just not just the fighting games. There’s stuff like Guilty Gear 2 Overture, which um for lack of a better term, is basically just a single player MOA. Like it’s kind of got like a strategy element to it. There’s enemy spawners. You got to blow up the spawners. Uh a lot of stuff happened with this game. This is where like a lot of the uh Valentine lore originally comes from. This is where Sin is first ever introduced as a character. He did not start in the fighting games. He started here in Guilty Gear Overture of all things. Like Guilty Gear 2 Overture has actually a decent amount of the Guilty Gear like lore and world building. And there’s been other weird forays like Guilty Gear Dust Strikers, which isn’t technically a fighting game. They’ve been willing to do other things with the IP. Like obviously a big one is Guilty Gear Dual Rulers, which wrapped up just a little bit ago, right? an anime which is all canonical and covers a lot of ground not covered in the main Guilty Gear Strive storyline right so it’s a big expansion on the world building of the franchise and I know they’re very invested in expanding Guilty Gear it would have been a little over a year ago now I remember I had an interview with Duke Shawitari during like the press circuit for the ABBA release and he told me that they really really want to uh expand Guilty Gear not just in gaming this was before Dual Dual Rulers was announced admittedly, so I’m sure that was part of what he’s talking about, but made me believe, you know, there’s maybe more to it. Arc System Works is expanding. You know, we’re making new games like Damon and Baby as Duke put out there during that direct, but frankly, Guilty Gear Strive or just Guilty Gear as a whole rather. It’s the single biggest franchise that they own. Sure, they do a lot of, you know, big games. Marvel Tokon will be a big game. Dragon Ball Fighters was a big game, but they don’t own that. They own Guilty Gear Lock, Stock, and Barrel. And when they’re doing things like acquiring RPG studios, maybe there might be a Guilty Gear RPG sometime in the future. Who knows? I don’t, right? Just speculation. But, uh, the growing of Arc System Works is definitely something that’s happening. Like, Guilty Gear Strive outsold Exard something like 10 plus times over. It sold over 3 million copies. And obviously though it’s a licensed game for another uh you know corporate entity, it’s not like Marvel Tokon’s going to be a small release either, right? That’s going to be a pretty big deal. So interesting to see where the future will lead us. Like uh season 5 for Strive all but a guarantee uh as Kenuchi puts it and they’re branching out and they would like to make more Guilty Gear associated products that aren’t ne necessarily fighting games. And I’m definitely down to see them if they want to make them for sure. I’d be down for like a Guilty Gear character action game or something like that or any kind of RPG since they have their own in-house RPG studio now. Just don’t make another Souls game. We got too many of those. But yeah, big and bright times ahead for Arc System Works. And I just wanted to share this interview just cuz I thought it was pretty good and you know, gives you hope for the future and that’s always what you want, right? With that said, my friends, that is the news for today. That is everything we got for the moment. So that’s it for the video. So thank you very much for watching. Hope this video has found you well and go out and play some fighting games. Oh yeah. This is the love making. [Music]
So there was an interview with Ken Miyauchi, Producer on Guilty Gear Strive and some interesting things were brought up about the near future of the game pertaining towards more seasons of gameplay, and also the future of the Guilty Gear Franchise itself. Just because Marvel Tokon is waiting in the wings doesn’t mean Guilty Gear is going anywhere, lets talk about it and more!
