[ワシントン ３１日 ロイター] – トランプ米大統領はホワイトハウスのローズガーデンをフロリダ州にある自身の私邸「マールアラーゴ」風に改装し、大統領執務室に金色の装飾を施した後、東棟がある場所に２億ドルをかけた大宴会会場（ボールルーム）の建設を計画している。
この建設計画はトルーマン大統領が１９５２年にホワイトハウスを全面改装して以来、最も大規模な事業になる可能性がある。ホワイトハウスは１８００年に建設された。
レビット米大統領報道官は７月３１日、報道陣に対し、約８３６０平方メートルある東棟の工事が９月に始まり、トランプ氏の任期が終了する２０２９年１月より「ずっと前」に完成すると述べた。建設費用の２億ドルはトランプ氏やその他の献金者が提供し、東棟の東側に建設されるという。
歴代の大統領は限られた来客だけの行事に公式晩餐室、要人を迎えた大規模な行事にそれよりも広い東の間をそれぞれ利用し、時には南庭に仮設テントを設置して大規模な晩餐会を開いている。
トランプ氏はしばしば、ホワイトハウスに大規模な宴会場がないと不満を述べていた。大統領執務室に金の装飾を施すなど、ホワイトハウスに自らの好みを反映させると決断してきた。
