Toriyama Kengyo is a real blind millionaire who bought Hana no I, Yoshiwara’s number one courtesan, who took the name Segawa.

In Japan during the Heian period, blind people were given official ranks in memory of a blind prince who was the son of the emperor.

There were four official ranks: Zato, Kodo, Betsuto, and Kengyo, and during the Edo period they were further divided into 17 ranks.

The shogunate allowed blind people to engage in usury, and there were as many as 3,000 blind moneylenders and zatō-kashi in Edo.

Kengyo was the highest rank, and Toriyama Kengyo was their boss.

Toriyama Kengyo bought Hana no I, but he was banished from Edo when it was discovered that he was using unscrupulous methods to collect money.
