New Covid variant XEC spreads rapidly across 27 countries; global alert issued.
A new coronavirus variant, XEC, has emerged in Europe and is spreading rapidly across 27 countries, including the UK, US, and China. First identified in Germany in June, XEC is a hybrid of two Omicron subvariants, KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, which are dominant in Europe. While India has not reported any cases yet, around 500 samples from countries like Poland, Norway, and Portugal have detected this variant. Experts are closely monitoring its rapid growth in places like Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. XEC has new mutations that could make it more contagious, especially during the autumn and winter months, but vaccines are still expected to protect against severe illness. Scientists suggest it may become the dominant strain soon.
